Matt Smith


The winningest coach in the history of Johns Hopkins University and Centennial Conference soccer, retired after 15 seasons at JHU with a career record of 240-44-19 (.821). As a result, Smith ranks in the NCAA top 10 (all divisions) for coaches with at least 10 years experience. Smith, who achieved fourteen straight years in the NSCAA top 25, guided the Johns Hopkins University to a record 7 Centennial Conference titles, 5 ECAC appearances, including 3 ECAC titles, and 9 NCAA Tournament appearances. In the NCAAs, his teams competed in the sweet 16 three times, the Elite 8 three times, and the National Finals once. Smith's teams and players hold every school record at JHU and more than 12 records in the Centennial Conference. In addition, his teams placed 13 All-Americans, 5 Academic All-Americans, 38 All-Region, 81 All-Conference, and won the NSCAA National Academic Award 8 times.

In 2008, Crystal Palace USA (CPUSA) in relationship with Crystal Palace England recruited Smith to lead their new CPUSA Professional Development Academy. The CPUSA Academy employs 9 college coaches in 6 age groups for training and scouting for Crystal Palace. Players that train with Crystal Palace are open to travel abroad for professional opportunities when appropriate. CPUSA Academy expects more than 100 players to be with the training academy by 2009.

A 1988 graduate of Towson University, where he was the Tigers' leading scorer twice and the team MVP his senior year, Smith later spent two years as the first assistant coach at his alma mater before moving to Hopkins.

Smith is a co-founder and co-director of the Elite 300 Soccer Academy, a camp that attracts players from across the nation. He is also successful as a coach in the Maryland Olympic Development Program, where his 2006 team won the U.S. Regionals and the National Championship in February. He has also served as director of the Maryland ODP.
